How does a website make money?
There are 6 particularly good ways to make money from a website and you can use all of these, one or several. 1. You can sell a physical product. 2. You can sell e-goods like ebooks, photos, clip art. 3. You can sell other people’s physical or e-goods products. 4. You can make money from Google Adsense ads placed on your site. 5. You can make money by selling advertising space on your site. 6. You can sell a service/craft.
How does a website make money from products?: Sell a physical product. In other words an actual product you have to then send to the customer. It could be anything from clothing to DVD’s to books or toys etc. Like the ones in this online catalogue. or products you source from local suppliers etc. The beauty of having a website to sell products from is that unlike having a shop, the running costs are VERY low and you can reach a worldwide audience. So, massive sales are possible if you build a site that reaches the top of the search engines. The disadvantage of making money from your site with actual products is that you have to spend time packing and posting everything you sell. Plus you probably have to pay for stock up front which means you have to manage your cash-flow carefully. So, let’s look at the other ways to make money from a website and see how they compare.
Sell information products The advantage of this is that these are usually sent by email so you don’t spend time on packing and posting. Plus, if you sell e-books, you usually just by each e-book once, but can re-sell it over and over again. Same goes for clip art and photos. In fact you can create these yourself. Sell other people’s products I personally love this option as I’m not a workaholic!! I’d rather be on the beach. So here’s how this works: This method is called affiliate marketing but there’s also a variation on this called Dropshipping. I’ll cover each separately. There are lots of companies that will pay you a good commission simply for sending them customers who then buy from them. They track your sales by way of a coded link that you put on your website (it’s very simple and quick to do this). They deal with taking the customers payment and posting or emailing the product. Job done! You then get a check, often only once your sales exceed about $100. Think about this for a moment: You spend your time building a website that starts to attract LOTS of visitors. Let’s say 1000++ a day. A percentage of those will buy a product. Let’s say only 1% buy to be really, really conservative. That’s 10 sales a day on which you may make anything between $10 and $100 or more in commission. Now can you see how powerful this system of making money is? But the 2 keys are building your website right so that it will get all those visitors, and finding affiliate products to sell that people will buy. Dropshipping is where you use a dropshipping company who will send THEIR products to the customers you find. But the difference is, you don’t send customers to their website. You get the customer to buy a product from your site, then you tell the dropshipper what product to send to whom. I don’t like this method as much but that’s my choice. You may prefer it. Google Adsense Ads This is an interesting way to make money from your website because you don’t have to sell ANYTHING! You earn each time visitors CLICKS on the ads you place on your site. It doesn’t make any difference to you if they buy from the site the ad clicks to or not. You get paid just for the click. All those cents/pence etc can really add up! Make money selling advertising space on your site When you have a successful website (ie one with many visitors) you can charge companies who want to place their banners and ads on your site. So, your site purely gives your visitors information on a subject, and you make money from the advertising. Your site could be about fishing. So, companies that sell fishing equipment etc may want to advertise with you. You can put a heading on your site which says ‘Advertise here’ and this could link through to a page which gives them more info. Or you could use a ‘middle-man’ and go to a company that already has a database of companies that want to place ads on websites.
