Online Domain Names

If you want to buy or sell online domain names, or if you simply want to know more about them I'm going to cover all you need to know right here.

In case you are very new to the internet, web domain names are simply the addresses of websites.

For instance the domain name of this site is shown in the bar at the top of your browser window: www.2makemoneyfromhome.com. More famous domain names include www.ebay.com (auction site) and www.google.com (search engine).

People who are fairly inexperienced about the internet (we all are/were at some stage!) often think that they need a domain name simply so that they can print it on their business cards that they give to clients - so that the client can then type in the domain name to see what's on the website. So, many people are buying online domain names with a poor name that won't help their business, and they are overlooking the huge power of a good domain name.

What's a poor domain name? Well, often people buy a domain that is their own name, like www.billjones.com. Or it's a 'clever' name like www.callusfirst.com

Why is that a bad idea? Because the subject of the site is not contained in the domain name.

Let's say your website is all about pet accessories. If you managed to buy the domain www.petaccessories.com you'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

That's because firstly, the search engines are far more likely to notice your site when someone types in 'pet accessories' to a search engine if your domain reflects that subject.

Secondly many people do an online search as follows: they type in the subject (pet accessories) and they just add dot com (.com) on the end. So guess whose site will show up?

So, basically you can get free visitors coming to your website just by getting the domain name right.
