Basically, as the name suggests, you sell products of some kind via home-based parties, rather than door-to-door or via brochure drops. It's a very effective way to sell and can be enjoyable too.

I really shied away from making money with parties initially. I felt it just wasn’t ‘me’ and I had a fear of public speaking - even if it was simply to a group of people in someone’s living room!

However… like many people I always end up doing the very things I say I will never do! I have created some really useful extra income with party plan over the years. Friends of mine make a very good income with it because they do parties regularly.

It also helps to have a genuine interest in others and to be a people person. If you are naturally bubbly and out-going your parties may be more successful as the people who come to them will have fun, feel uplifted and inspired.

You also, in my experience, need to be well organized and professional. These are obviously skills you can develop.

The benefits of making money with party plan

It is great fun and very easy once you have done your first few parties.

It’s like getting paid to socialize really.

The downside is that your income is dependent on you being there physically doing the work. It's not a passive income like affiliate marketing or having your own website. You won't earn if you are ill or on holiday. However it's ideal if you simply want some flexible extra income.

What can you earn?

The pay will obviously vary according to the company you join.

As a guide for you, I get 48% profit with my company. When I first started it was 35%. At an average party I make at least £70 - £100 profit (I’m in the UK) for a couple of hours ‘work’. Another benefit of making money with party plan is that you get to meet new people. Also it can fit well around a family if you have children, because you can start work once the kids are in bed (if they are young).

You can also do parties in the morning if that suits you, maybe turn it into a coffee morning.

You can also sell products at: fetes, craft fairs, fund raising events, natural health fairs and so on, depending on the products and your companies’ policies.

Let’s say you make $50 per party as a low estimate. Could you do one party a day? That’s $250 a week if you just do weekday evenings!

Maybe you could just do 2 parties a week – that’s $400 a month for a few evenings of fun.

How do you get parties on a regular basis?

Most people can have their first party in their own home for their friends and neighbors etc. At the end of the party offer a free product to anyone who books a party with you then and there. Everyone likes free stuff, so you should get plenty of people taking you up on this.

All they have to do is invite 10-20 friends round and supply soft drinks (no food, and then just nibbles, until after the party is over and people have placed their orders - it’s just too distracting).

You tell them that you will arrive and do the entire party yourself, and they get some products free just for inviting people. Tell them the value of the products they will receive depends on how many people turn up to the party and what they spend in total. This will encourage them to invite loads of friends!

Aim to get 2 new parties booked from each party you do and you should never run out.

My top tip is to sell products that are consumable
as I said earlier. They need to be great quality, that goes without saying I hope. Why? Because you will then get regular repeat customers. Imagine if every time you do a party you get 3-6 regular long-term customers, who buy from you outside of parties.

I no longer need to do any parties as I have such a good number of regular repeat customers, who either come to my home for products or I deliver or post them.

Your party plan income will increase dramatically if you sell consumable products compared to if you sell items that are non consumable. It also means that you don’t have to keep doing parties if you don’t want to. Once you have a good number of customers, you can simply keep them supplied with products.

This frees up your time to make money in other ways to if you want to, or simply to have more free time.

Make sure the party plan company you join is ethical and stable.

Do they have debts, are they run by a strong management team, are they approved by the relevant governing bodies such as the Direct Selling Association?

Do they have a good reputation? Do they look after their distributors/agents? Also do they have a generous pay plan or are they just out for their own profit?

I recommend you do your research thoroughly before you commit.

I know people who have joined companies only to lose their business because the company went bust or got bought out. Don’t let that happen to you.

Party plan is a great, fun way to create an income and you can earn good extra income if you follow the above advice.
