Should you have an ebay shop?

Something vital I learned from successful eBay sellers was to open my own eBay shop. I hadn’t realized when I started out that this would save me a fortune in listing fees! I just saw it as another expense. The cheapest shop is all most people need, you can always upgrade once you are really successful. You get your own domain name which is a real plus, and an online identity - a bit like having your own website.

You have to have bought and/or sold about 20 items and received ‘good feedback’ before you can open a shop. Why not buy things you want to resell on ebay? That way you don't waste money.

Where do you find what to sell on eBay?

Again, there are useful tricks of the trade that will help you. Some tips I can share here:

Many eBay sellers list ‘wholesale items’ in auctions and in their shops. In other words they put collections of items in bulk numbers into auctions at wholesale prices, eg. 50 necklaces, 100cd’s, and so on.

Simply do a search on eBay with the word ‘wholesale’ in it eg. ‘wholesale costume jewellery’ and you will see what I mean. If you learn when are the best times to shop on eBay you could pick up some great bargains. This is why it is so worthwhile to invest in good information. It's challenging to make money on ebay if you don't learn what the competition is doing.

So, eBay itself can be a great and easy way to find items at low prices which you can then list individually at higher prices in your auction listings or in your shop. The other advantage to this is, every time you buy or sell something on eBay you are given a feedback rating. This rating will then appear next to your eBay name. The higher this number is the better. It shows you are successful. So, if you are buying regularly on eBay to get your own stock, you will increase your all-important feedback score. This is a crafty way of using ebay to make money and increasing your all important feedback at the same time!

Wholesale catalogue of items to sell on ebay

There is a wholesale catalogue which is very useful as it has loads of low-priced items that are popular on eBay. It means you can buy everything you need in one place.

What I like about this catalogue is that you don’t have to order large quantities in one go, which is great and also unusual. There’s nothing worse than having to order $1000 of items only to find they don’t sell well. It also messes up your cash-flow if you have to pay that kind of money up-front. With both the above methods you don't have to leave your home to find items to sell - so you save on time and fuel!

Obviously a key to using ebay to make money is to find items at low prices that are in demand, and that reach high prices in auctions. There is a good profit margin with the items in this catalogue. They show a good selection of items on their information page so have a look if you are interested to know more.

You can also find items at car boot sales, flea markets, fetes and auction houses.

Another place to look is local designers or artists. Do they want an online outlet for their work? Will they give you exclusive rights to sell their work on eBay?

Do you travel? If you are holidaying in countries where they sell cheap local crafts that could be a great option for you.

You can make items to sell

You can make jewelery or do carvings, pottery, pictures etc. Whatever you like! Unique, quality items can go like hot cakes on eBay, particularly if people cannot get these items anywhere else.

This way you are using ebay to make money from your craft skills, reaching a far wider audience than only selling your crafts offline. Check on ebay to see what kind of crafts sell the best before you start making stuff.

Maybe you know a lot about cars and can buy cars at your local auction, then sell them for a nice profit on eBay.

Another of the keys to using ebay to make money successfully is to sell items that are all part of a niche. In other words, specialize in a small market.

If everything you sell is on the same subject, you will get much better results than if you sell a wide variety of items. Most of the top sellers specialize like this, and I have found that the best way to have success fast is to copy those who are already successful.

As an example, if you are interested in selling shoes on eBay, will they be designer shoes, or low-price shoes?

Will they be kids’ shoes or trainers or evening shoes and so on.

If you are thinking of selling books then what kind? Rare books, old books, children’s books, self-help books? Or factual books, school books, language books, second hand books and so on.

Find your best subject area then narrow it down. Then do your research and see who else, if anyone, is already selling that on eBay. See whether there is enough demand. Can your prices compete with theirs?

Try a few items out first, test all your ideas out and don’t go buying vast quantities until you have properly tested the market. It’s so easy to go rushing in, full of excitement, but if you control that and take the time to do these vital steps you will make money on eBay much more successfully and quickly.

Bear in mind that using ebay to make money means that you are likely to spend a lot of your time wrapping items that you have sold and posting them off to customers. If you don’t like those activities, this may not be for you! Having said that, once your business is doing well, you could pay someone else to do that part for you!

There are people making substantial incomes on eBay ($10,000 monthly for instance). And many others who are making a useful part-time extra income. As with any business, learn all about it, treat it like a business, enjoy it, and you could also be using ebay to make money - successfully.
